ABOUT CATALYST

The CATALYST creative arts festival has been organised by Petersfield Museum and asks young people of today to take lessons from the past to envision a future. Students from HSDC have been challenged to take inspiration from the historical collections and stories to imagine a future world and share it with us through a variety of creative mediums.

OUR TASK

As Journalism students at HSDC South Downs,we were tasked to produce social action material. The brief required us to think about a current problem that we would like to see disappear 100 years from now. We could choose to focus on a social,  a political or an environmental route to produce creative media work in either print or broadcast mediums. In response we have tackled a diverse range of topics including racism, climate change and mental health issues.

As a key part of this assignment, we need to gain feedback from our audience.  Please take a moment to go through the projects and then complete our feedback surveys. Your comments will be greatly valued and help us to achive our assessment outcomes. Tell us what you think...

About Our Course

UAL Level 3 Diploma / Extended Diploma - Creative Media Production - Journalism and Digital Communications

Everything you see, read, hear or watch has been created by someone and in today’s digital world the opportunities are endless. Digital content comes in many forms but now, more than ever, is a need for that content to be reliable and trustworthy.

You may want to work for traditional media, such as magazines or in radio; or you may be interested in learning how to connect with audiences through social media content. You could be looking at sport journalism or esports journalism; or even be considering the world of social media marketing, marketing and PR, or any form of communications based employment . Whatever your interests, this course offers highly transferable skills that will allow you to progress onto university, an apprenticeship or into the workforce. We work with local employers on live briefs and will help you find essential work experience to enhance your opportunities.

On this course you will be given creative freedom to adapt your work to an area that interests you. Love music, gaming, fashion, sport? Work with students across our campus to create content for our online magazine. You’ll get the opportunity to review gigs and shows, report from football matches or from our new esports events! You can produce podcasts or take photos, run your own social media channels… This is your portfolio and we encourage you to work on subjects relevant to you, whilst teaching you all the skills you need to succeed.

Using traditional journalism skills of research, accuracy and interview techniques you will learn how to reach audiences through the mediums of text, audio and images, with your work being published on social media, websites and exhibitions. You will learn how to write for different audiences and how to edit your content to meet the needs of your audience. Underpinning all the practical work, you will learn how the media industry is structured and the opportunities that could await you in the future.

Did you know that the Creative Industries are a huge growth area for employment? According to official figures, this sector is adding new posts at twice the rate of the rest of the economy with an estimated 2,040,000 jobs and 75 percent of those are outside London.

Essential for any credible content producer is a sound understanding of good practice, so we will teach you how the industry is regulated, the basics of media law and how the press report stories. We look at contemporary news stories to discuss areas like representation, bias, moral panics and the danger of fake news.

All of this is achieved through providing a safe and fun learning environment with supportive, industry experienced staff that will help you develop your confidence and encourage your professional growth. There are plenty of opportunities waiting for you in The Creative Industries.
